What is Infrared?
80% of the sun’s rays are infrared. Our atmosphere allows IR rays in the 1 to 14 micron range to safely reach the earth’s surface. Infrared rays are part of the electromagnetic spectrum which also includes gamma rays, X-rays, ultraviolet, visible, microwaves and radio waves. The only difference between these different types of radiation is their wavelength or their frequency. With increasing wavelength, the frequency, energy and temperature decreases from gamma rays to radio waves. Traveling at the speed of light these heat waves reach the earth’s surface after the earth’s atmosphere has blocked out the hazardous rays.
The electromagnetic spectrum can be divided into: 1. The Optical Spectrum or the spectrum that is visible to the human eye. It includes seven colours: red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue and violet. Of the visible lights, red is the colour having the longest wavelengths and violet the shortest. 2. Invisible Lights outside the Optical Spectrum. These include among various invisible light waves; Infra (meaning ‘below’) red, and Ultra (meaning ‘beyond’) violet. Thus, infrared light is ‘below red’ and ultraviolet light is ‘beyond violet’.
In 1800, William Herschel, a German astronomer, while researching the heat effects of the colours of the optical spectrum, found that the temperatures in the colours increased as he went from violet to red. Herschel also discovered that the temperature continued to increase beyond the colour red, into a region of invisible light which he named, “Infrared”.
Infrared lies between the visible and microwave portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Infrared waves have wavelengths longer than visible and shorter than microwaves, and have frequencies which are lower than visible and higher than microwaves.
Infrared is broken into three distinct segments: near, mid and far-infrared differentiated by wavelength measured in microns. One micron is equivalent to 1/1,000,000 of a meter. Near-infrared is that part of the infrared spectrum that is closest to visible light and Far-infrared is closer to the microwave region. Mid-infrared is the region between these two.
The human body responds to this deep heating effect via a hypothalamic-induced increase in both heart volume and rate. The body tissues selectively absorb FIR as the water in the cell reacts in a process called ‘resonant absorption’. This is said to occur when the frequency of FIR matches the frequency of the water in the cell causing toxins to be dropped off into the blood stream and excreted by way of sweat, faeces and urine. History of Infrared Sauna
Palm healing, which is a 3000 years old tradition in China, has been based on the healing properties of the natural infrared rays. Chinese researchers consider the band from 2 to 25 microns as the most therapeutic.
